Can reverse osmosis membranes be recycled after replacement?

Generally speaking, reverse osmosis membranes can be cleaned.

Caustic soda and hydrochloric acid are commonly used in industry, and a specialized offline cleaning device is used at a specific temperature. The process involves washing with caustic soda first, then with caustic soda, and soaking for a long time. The complexity of the process is beyond the expertise of ordinary people.

So it is not recommended to clean the household reverse osmosis membrane, as it is too troublesome and not easy to clean.

Cleaning method

  1. Enzyme detergent is used to treat the membrane, which is particularly effective against organic pollution, especially protein, oil and other organic pollutants. The cleaning effect is better at 50-60 ℃. Generally, after running for 10 days or half a month, 1% enzyme detergent is used to clean the membrane under low pressure. Due to the low concentration of enzyme detergent used, a longer immersion time is required.
  2. Citric acid solution is used to continuously or cyclically rinse the membrane with 1% -2% citric acid aqueous solution under high or low pressure, which has a good cleaning effect on Fe (OH) 3 pollution.
  3. Concentrated saline solution is effective for cleaning membranes with severe limb pollution. This is because high concentration saline solution can weaken the interactions between colloids and promote the formation of colloidal aggregates.
  4. Hydrogen peroxide solution, for example, diluting 0.5L of 30% H2O2 with 12L of deionized water and then cleaning the membrane surface, is particularly effective against organic pollution.
  5. Water soluble emulsion is very effective for cleaning membranes contaminated with oil and iron oxide, usually cleaning for 30-60 minutes.
  6. The simplest physical cleaning method is to use low-pressure and high flow rapid membrane permeation water flushing for 30 minutes, which can restore the permeability of the membrane to a certain extent. However, over time, the permeability still decreases. Alternatively, a mixture of water and air can be used to flush the membrane surface under low pressure for 15 minutes. This method is effective for cleaning membranes that are initially contaminated with organic matter.

Is there a specific standard for replacing reverse osmosis membranes?

Generally speaking, after a period of use, the water production of the membrane will decrease, the water production pressure will increase, and the conductivity of the membrane will also be affected. When these problems occur, your membrane can be cleaned or replaced.

If the pressure and water production of the reverse osmosis membrane after cleaning meet the requirements, it is sufficient, but the conductivity generally does not decrease unless the membrane is heavily contaminated by organic matter, because the pore size increases with washing, and no matter what kind of solution is used, the water production and pressure after cleaning cannot be the same as a new membrane.

Rinse of new membrane

  1. After installing the membrane components, the new system needs to be thoroughly rinsed to thoroughly remove any residual impurities, solvents, and protective liquids from the system.
  2. When using the produced water for drinking, it needs to be rinsed for at least 24 hours.
  3. Before starting the system, the concentrated water valve should be kept fully open. After the system is started, the concentrated water valve can be gradually and slowly closed to achieve the set recovery rate. It is strictly prohibited to start the equipment when the concentrated water valve is closed.
  4. During the operation of the system, valves on the water production pipeline must not be closed at any time (including pre start, routine operation, flushing, and chemical cleaning of the system).
  5. Before high-pressure operation, perform low-pressure flushing through a soft start mechanism or variable frequency speed regulation to expel air.
